Winston Churchill Public School is nestled in the heart of the City of Kingston. It is located only three blocks west of Queen’s University. Currently our school serves 324 students in Kindergarten through to Grade 8. The majority of students live in close proximity to the school. Many of our WCPS community members are tied into one of the major institutions in the area - Queen’s University, St. Lawrence College, Kingston General Hospital or Hotel Dieu Hospital. Our school also offers a special education program for students from across the system with developmental disabilities and other exceptionalities. The rich tradition of excellence and our beautiful setting make Winston Churchill a unique and special site. An incredibly supportive and diverse community, a talented and caring staff, and an involved student body have worked
together to create a dynamic and positive learning environment that fosters personal growth and excellence. This dynamic partnership makes WCPS the sought-after school that it is - for academics, the arts, and active/healthy living. The following provides a snapshot of what we offer.
Winston Churchill excels in all aspects of student life and encourages leadership at all grade levels through our Student Council, our Me to We initiative, Yearbook Club and Reading Buddies.
Academically, our students continue to exceed the provincial standard in reading, writing, and math in the Junior and Primary Provincial Assessments. There are many enriched learning environments created in the school to enable students to pursue challenging and creative endeavours and to extend their learning in literacy, numeracy, science, technology, design, robotics, the arts, and global awareness.
In the Arts, beyond the traditional music, visual, drama, and dance currricula, we offer a Grade 7-8 instrumental music program. And with the support of our School Council our students have the opportunity to work with artists from the Ontario Arts Council on a variety of pursuits throughout the year. Students also participate in our Primary Choir or Junior Choir. They can also be part of musical productions (i.e., 2014's Annie, the Musical).
In Athletics, our students participate in both extramural and intramural sports such as soccer, ultimate frisbee, volleyball, basketball, cross country running, and track and field. WCPS also offers an after school badminton club for Junior and Intermediate students. Healthy pursuits such as Daily Physical Activity are also part of the school experience. Every year since 2009 Winston Churchill has been awarded the Healthy Education and Active Living (HEAL) award for its efforts.
