Bulldog Family Bulletin - October 20th-Nov. 1st

Dear Families;We've had a couple busy weeks at Winston with a successful Meet the <img src="/images/8cf17223-56be-4076-9047-a2ad4300a6a6" alt="Screenshot 2025 10 18 205830" width="174" height="209" style="width:174px;height:209px;display:inline-block;float:right">Educator evening, Scholastic Bookfair, Fort Henry regional road race, wrapping up soccer club and starting up volleyball! We've had the start up of art club and Eco Club and there is an energetic hum to our busy days at Winston. Our group of fifty-five dedicated cross country runners made us all proud as they did their very best at the Fort Henry cross country race on Oct. 16th! They showed grit, perseverance and determination and all need to be commended! Eleven of our runners earned top spots to continue to the District level meet on October 22nd at Fort Henry. Big congratulations to the following:Atom Girls: Scarlett, Olivia B, Nora, Pia and TessAtom Boys: Ryan KBantam Girls: Lottie, Robyn and ZoeBantam Boys: Finn, JacksonA special thank you to Ms. Koebel for all her hours of coaching with this group! WISE (Women in Science Education) will start next week for Grades 4,5,6 students, and the Queen's Athletic Zone supported our Meet the Educator event! It was great having players from the women's hockey team and lacrosse team here to interact and play with kids! Kaleidoscope buddies begin soon with eight Queen's mentors coming on a weekly basis to Winston. Students and staff did a great job with two practice fire drills last week. Everyone reacted quickly and calmly and were out of the building in under 3 minutes. We will have another 'surprise' drill next week along with a lockdown procedure drill. We will be running intramurals so everyone will get a chance to play! There will be enough players to run 4 intramural teams at lunch recess throughout the months of October and November and possibly into December. There will be a junior volleyball tournament sometime in November (date TBD). We will select a tournament team after observing our co-ed intramurals and 1 after school practice each. After October 20th, students will know whether they will be on the tournament team. Everyone is invited to continue play intramurals at lunch during the school day. GIRLS - Tuesday October 14th, 2025 (3:30-4:45)BOYS -Monday October 20th, 2025 (3:30-4:45)A few notes: <ul class="editor-list-ul"><li value="1" class="editor-listitem">Players cannot attend an after school practice without returning a SIGNED permission form (below)</li><li value="2" class="editor-listitem">Players are expected to come to practice with appropriate athletic attire including running shoes and a refillable water bottle.</li><li value="3" class="editor-listitem">Knee pads are not mandatory, but many players like to wear them.</li><li value="4" class="editor-listitem">As part of the team, players will arrive to practice on time and use encouraging words and actions towards their teammates and coaches.</li><li value="5" class="editor-listitem">Players are ambassadors of Winston Churchill PS, representing our school community, therefore their actions and words on and off the court should reflect this.</li><li value="6" class="editor-listitem">The junior volleyball rules have changed to triple ball which is a 4 on 4 style of play with smaller court dimensions and more playing time for everyone </li><li value="7" class="editor-listitem">Players rotate on serve with no other substitutions. </li></ul>Further details with finalized teams, the tournament date and fees will be available soon. This newsletters are where we will share school-specific information and highlights of student work and events in the building and is generated on our school website. We use the platform School Day for online payments (field trips, milkshake days, etc) and for digital permission slip signatures. ALL families are required to sign up using their child's individual match key that will be provided within the first weeks of school. To help us better understand how students’ identities and experiences relate to their achievement and well-being, we are launching our second See Yourself in Limestone Student Census Survey this fall.The census is a voluntary and confidential survey for students in Grades 4 to 12, running from November 24 to 28, 2025. It gathers information about students’ identities and their experiences at school. This data is then paired with academic information to help us understand what school is like for different groups of students.Important information for families:· The survey is optional.· Responses are confidential and students can skip any questions they do not wish to answer.· Students will complete the survey during class time.· Students who do not participate will be provided with an alternative activity.Families who do not want their student(s) to complete the survey must contact their school principal by Friday, November 14, 2025. Thank you to our volunteers for helping kids navigate the book fair and make selections! The fair is open on Monday for students to view items with their class (1st and 2nd block with their teachers), Tuesday and Wednesday on a scheduled time for purchasing (1st and 2nd block - classroom teachers will communicate their purchasing time), Thursday for any additional purchases (1st and 2nd block for those who need to visit the fair again) and Wednesday evening (Oct. 8th) during our Meet the Educator event 4:30-6:30pm. Thanks for your support in making our Scholastic Book Fair a Success! Special thanks to our Grade 2 class for their land acknowledgement and for classroom contributions to our Every Child Matters board. We are committed to learning and doing better for the Indigenous children who didn't return home and survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Could you hear our students cheering from wherever you were on this past Wednesday afternoon? We surpassed our fundraising goal of $2000 for our Terry Fox event which meant some brave educators took pies in the face from students! What a hoot! We will be running intramurals so everyone will get a chance to play! There will be enough players to run 4 intramural teams at lunch recess throughout the months of October and November and possibly into December. There will be a junior volleyball tournament sometime in November (date TBD). We will select a tournament team after observing our co-ed intramurals and 1 after school practice each. After October 20th, students will know whether they will be on the tournament team. Everyone is invited to continue play intramurals at lunch during the school day. There is no supervision on the yard after 3:25 so it is important that pick ups are punctual. Dear Families,It is hard to believe we are already approaching the end of October.  Excluding today and a handful of other days, we have enjoyed a beautiful and relatively warm fall. Since the start of the school year, it has been wonderful to see the momentum of learning and the wide variety of extracurricular activities taking place across Limestone schools. As we head into November next week, I want to share a few updates with you:See Yourself in Limestone – Student Census SurveyInformation was shared with families earlier this week regarding the upcoming See Yourself in Limestone Student Census. The census is a voluntary and confidential survey for students in Grades 4 to 12. Please note, there was one error in the message shared with you regarding the dates of the Student Census. The correct dates are November 24 to 28, 2025.As a reminder, families who do not want their student(s) to complete the survey must contact their school Principal by Friday, November 14, 2025. These materials help students learn about the lived experiences of Indigenous peoples in Canada and encourage thoughtful reflection on building a better future.To request free access, families can contact TFO directly at <a href="mailto:support@idello.org" class="editor-link">support@idello.org</a>.Do not miss this opportunity to bring meaningful French-language learning and cultural reflection into your home!Ministry and Board Resources for Math and LiteracyThere are many resources available designed to support your student’s learning in math and literacy, offering engaging activities that can make learning fun and effective for students and families. <a href="https://www.limestone.on.ca/tutoring" class="editor-link">Visit Limestone’s Online Learning Resources and Tutoring webpage</a> to learn more. Inclement Weather SeasonAs we approach the inclement weather months (roughly early November to early April), our transportation partner, Tri-Board Student Transportation Services (Tri-Board), works closely with their school bus companies to determine if it is safe to offer school transportation on inclement weather days. School buses function differently than other vehicles, and sometimes, although it is safe for the average family vehicle to travel, it is not safe for a school bus to be on the road. Due to the geographic size of our district, weather conditions can vary significantly from one region to another. As a result, there are times when transportation cancellations may only apply to specific areas experiencing adverse conditions, while other regions remain unaffected. Having to cancel school transportation is understandably disruptive to families, but Tri-Board always puts the safety of their 30,000-plus bus riders first and foremost in their decision-making. Upcoming Student Census Survey

Dear Families,Limestone is committed to supporting every student in achieving success. To do this, we need to better understand how students’ identities, experiences, and academic outcomes are connected. That is why we are launching our second See Yourself in Limestone Student Census Survey this November.The Student Census is a voluntary survey for students in Grades 4 to 12. It gathers information about students’ identities and their experiences at school. This data is then paired with academic information to help us understand what school is like for different groups of students.It is important to note that:<ul class="editor-list-ul"><li value="1" class="editor-listitem">The survey is optional.</li><li value="2" class="editor-listitem">Responses are confidential.</li><li value="3" class="editor-listitem">Students can choose to answer as much or as little of the survey as they wish.</li></ul>The goal is to identify ways schools can better support students and ensure everyone has what they need to succeed.
